Ask a Librarian

Timeline of Events of Nasa Biblioteka, Dalmatinsko Drustvo.
Prior to the formation of the Yugoslav Club Inc. and the Yugoslav Benevolent Society Inc in 1930 ther existed a Yugoslav Library which was founded in 1927. This was absorbed into the Yugoslav Club in 1930.
There was a Yugoslav Library in the Manchester Unity Building in the 1930's. This Building was located on the corner of Hobson Street and Victoria Street, City, the current site of TVNZ building.
Both Clubs maintained a library or collection of books and there were periods when the library almost ceased to exist. A new library was built during the 1970's in the Yugoslav Benevolent Society premises in Karangahape Road (ex Tivoli Theatre). This had a good collection of books, some of which were donated by Matica Iseljenika, the Yugoslav Embassy and Auckland University.
When the Yugoslav Society moved to our present premises in New North Rd,, Eden Terrace, a purpose built library was established in 1983 and as can be seen, it has one from strength to strength. Books, which are deemed to be historical, because of age or rarity, have been transferred to the Dalmatian Genealogical and Historical Society Library. This is a reference Library, for research purposes only and books can not be loaned out.
However, members can borrow books from the Society Library, "Nasa Biblioteka". The Library is open every Friday evening, when members are welcome to borrow books or return those previously borrowed.
As many of these books held in the Library are no longer in print, we ask that every care is taken, so that they can be enjoyed by all and in the future.
There are books covering all genres, the non-Fiction in Dewey Decimal categories; The Fiction section has a wide ranging titles from popular authors all translated into Croatian, Serbian and other Balkan languages, from English, French, Russian amongst others, even Indian!
There is a fine section on childrens fiction which can be enjoyed by the whole family.
Should you have any books you would like to donate to the library, These would be most welcome. Please approach the Librarians on duty on a Friday night.
You will be required to be entered on our database of Library users. You will be required to enter your own password and this will give you the freedom to look up titles of books in the Library at your leisure at home. Once you have borrowed a book through the database, a reminder email will be sent to you to return the book when your time is up.
We trust that you and your family will use this library and wish you pleasant reading.
